The New Voice of State Environmental Policy
Rock Creek Conservancy Congratulates Sambhav Sankar for his Selection at the Executive Director of The Environmental Council of the States
March 13, 2018 - Bethesda, MD - Rock Creek Conservancy (RCC) congratulates Conservancy board treasurer Sambhav (Sam) Sankar for his recent selection as Executive Director and general counsel to The Environmental Council of the States (ECOS). In his new role, Sankar will use his extensive background in federal government, industry, and private legal practice to continue championing our nation's most pressing environmental issues, this time from a state’s perspective.
His appointment to this position comes at a crucial time in environmental policy. Budgetary cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Interior and the elimination of many federal environmental rules require states to take on more responsibility for the protection of the environment.
"We are thrilled for Sam to have been named to this position," stated Caroline Cunningham, interim Executive Director of RCC, "The Conservancy Board continues to attract some of the nation’s top environmental leaders." Among them is the recent appointment of Gary Guzy, a Deputy Director and General Counsel of the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), as the Conservancy’s Board Chairman. She continued, “Sam's new role will help bring the nation's best practices to bear on protecting Rock Creek Park and its watershed.”
The role of state agencies and local environmental groups, like Rock Creek Conservancy, will only continue to grow as long as federal protections are on the chopping block. The Conservancy supports Sankar's leadership to continue to develop the capacity of state environmental agencies to meet these new challenges while enhancing human health and the environment throughout the United States.
Previously, Sankar served as the Senior Advisor for Technology at The Nature Conservancy, the Senior Executive Counsel and Director of Environmental Operations at General Electric. He also served as a Trial Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, and Deputy Chief Counsel on the Presidential Commission on the BP Oil Spill. He has been a member of the Rock Creek Conservancy board since 2016.
