This mini-oasis is the gateway to Rock Creek Park for the many D.C. residents who come to the Carter Barron complex for music, sports, and other recreational activities. In 2018, the District Department of Energy and Environment installed several green-infrastructure projects (BMPs) to slow, absorb, and control the stormwater produced on the site. Conservancy volunteers will "adopt" these sites and provide maintenance support for them.

Site Details

The Carter Barron Mini-Oasis falls on the grounds of the Carter Barron Amphitheatre, Brightwood Recreation Center, and Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. The specific site is made up of recreational amenities including ball fields, parking lots, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, exercises courses, and tennis facilities.

In 2018 the District Department of Energy and Environment installed several stormwater best management practices to control and allow infiltration of stormwater produced on site. The facilities were designed in compliance with regulatory requirements for the District in stormwater control measures.

Upcoming Work

BMP Maintenance: Rock Creek Conservancy will be training volunteer stewards to inspect and provide maintenance on the BMPs on a monthly basis.

Invasive Plant Removal: Areas of forest near the picnic pavilions on site are covered in invasive plants like porcelainberry, wineberry, and knotweed which need to be removed. The Conservancy will use volunteer energy to remove these harmful invasive plants.

Supplemental Planting Efforts: Native shrubs and other low-lying plant species may be planted in support of the BMPs.
