people-powered restoration in action
After many years thoroughly removing invasives with the help of other volunteers, Rena approached the Conservancy to help restore the native plant community. In November 2021, volunteers planted 131 native plants with deer protection. These plants serve multiple purposes - herbaceous plants like woodrush and Christmas ferns help to stabilize steep slopes with poor soil, flowering plants like Cardinal flower help take up water in areas with poor drainage and provide food for pollinators, and a mix of trees and shrubs lining the trails will prevent dogs and people from venturing off trail and trampling the regenerating plant community.
